If you know me ... You know that I have been known to travel for a gig or a festival including going to Toronto for lost evenings Festival last year. This year, however, it was... A lot closer to home! This year we found ourselves in Edinburgh of all places!
When we were at Lost Evenings last year in Toronto, we had lots of discussions between our friendship group about where this year would be! We decided overall, that we definitely thought it would be in the UK, but there was lots of questions about where it be whether it would be London or elsewhere?! So when Edinburgh was announced we were all pretty happy! Having such a special festival that means so much to us. So close to home (within a 2-hour flight from London!) was so much fun and we were so grateful to be able to go again this year!
The lineup this year was fantastic as always! Frank and his team have an incredible habit of being able to pull together lineups that work so well on so many levels and also making the festival what it is alongside all the incredible panels and side projects that go along. For example, this year there was yoga one morning in one of the venue areas!
As per with all the Lost Evenings shows Frank had a headline set every night on the main stage. These sets are different every night. They normally include the greatest hits set and a nod to a certain album. Depending on when the show is! This year we had a nod to Positive Songs for Negative People, and acoustic duo set, a greatest hits set and a back in the day set which consisted of old songs that you don't hear very often! This last set being a personal favourite as having been to lots of Frank shows. It's great to hear songs from " Back in the day" which probably don't get played as often anymore!
The Weeknd will always consist of two main stages alongside lots of fringe events. The main stage just being called the main stage obviously, and the second stage beautifully being called the Nick Alexander stage. The second stage is named after a young man called Nick Alexander who was a friend of Frank and the bands, who lost his life in the Bataclan attacks in Paris. There is also a foundation set up in his name which was set up by his family, called the Nick Alexander trust. I recommend you check it out. They do lots of great work in the music world and ensuring the future of music with the younger generations.
As we have also said, there are lots of fringe events! The Frank community is wide, and they are always very supportive of one another! During lost evenings every year there is always a panels area, which through the day there are various panels from Frank and members of his band.... As well as other music professionals or musicians talking about topics of their choice. Alongside this, there is also the open mic stage and as previously mentioned this year we had yoga!
My personal favourites this year from outside of the headline set... Would be Ben brown to start with. For one man and a guitar... You would not believe the commotion that he can make! Although he may seem like a very calm man offstage just wait until you see his stage presence! A talented musician, who has Incredible stage presents and no doubt will make you laugh as well as leave you in loving his music.
My second personal favourite, who had a few sets across the weekend and were also compering was Koo Koo! Cuckoo were also at Toronto last year, and I absolutely loved them! They described themselves as a comedy disco and I think this sums them up pretty well! I kind of don't want to go into them... As I want you to go and explore them for yourselves! But I know, you're going to love them!
I could spend a long time talking about the community that has been built around this fan base. I could spend a long time talking about how lovely of a person Frank has been to myself and also the team around him and how nice they have been. But I think to fully understand lost evenings. You need to go for yourself! It is more than a festival... It's a weekend of feeling that you are constantly around friends. Plenty of people come by themselves... And leave with plenty of new friends!
Lost evenings continues next year! Next year, they will be across the pond in Dallas, Texas! Tickets are available at all your usual ticket sales websites.
Here's to another great year of lost evenings festival! I cannot wait to see where the 10-year anniversary Festival is going to be!
